Amistad Foundation was founded in the Fall of 2004 by Dwayne and Peggy Owens and was formally approved by the IRS as a 501 (C) 3 corporation in June, 2005.  Dwayne and Peggy have been serving as Co-Founders and Executive Directors since 2004.  From the beginning, the focus of this ministry has been in Latin America.  During the early years the goal of this ministry was to provide an opportunity for business people to participate in mission trips and to develop businesses managed by Christians that would fund church planters in the local community.

Several business seminars teaching servant leadership and business ethics were conducted by business leaders from Northwest Arkansas during 2005-2007.  The first seminar was in Puebla, Mexico in 2005 and was followed by seminars in Buenos Aires, Argentina (2006), Bogota, Columbia (2007) and Guatemala City, Guatemala (2007).  During the seminar in Guatemala early in 2007 we identified this country as the primary focus for the Amistad Foundation ministry.  Also at this time the goal of the ministry was changed to "connecting people and resources worldwide to transform communities through sustainable relationships".  Simply stated we started serving the people of Guatemala and exposing as many people as possible to the needs and opportunites in this country.

Our first partnership in Guatemala was initiated in 2007 when we teamed up with Tita Evertz to serve the people in the Guatemala City ghetto of La Limonada.  We served the people in this ghetto of 60,000 for several years as we continued to expand the circle of people involved with our ministry in this country.

In early 2008, we met Hugo and Susana Rosales who were serving as missionaries in the villages located in the mountains near Puruhla, Guatemala.  As our relationship grew Hugo and Susana agreed to work full time with Amistad and they became our eyes and ears on the ground in this very poor area of the country.  Together we began to serve this group of indigenous people by showing them the Love of God.  Since we began serving in these villages, children's and ladies Bible classes have been established and continue to grow, small businesses have been started by the SIFE group from Northwest Arkansas Community College and needs have been met in the area of nutrition and medical care.

The needs in this area of Guatemala are many and we pray that you will become a part of our ministry by praying for the people we serve, giving financially and becoming a member of our next team traveling to this beautiful country.
